15-year-old Mohammed Najem, from the city of Arbeen, garnered a large number of followers on Twitter, by sharing footage that documents the escalation of events in Eastern Ghouta.
The 15-year-old has become known for documenting events in Eastern Ghouta through his selfie videos, in which he speaks in English and addresses the international community.
Najem told SY24, “I began to publish in English on social media sites in order to convey messages to the international community, and explain that we are being subjected to bombing with highly-explosive and internationally prohibited weapons in Eastern Ghouta”.
“The siege caused huge disasters, and the heavy shelling was a major cause of inactivity, and prices sky-rocketing, and food scarcity in the markets,” he added.
“During our journey after being evacuated from Eastern Ghouta, and while standing at the checkpoints of the regime and Russia, I felt great fear, because regime TV channels called me a terrorist when I was shown in the videos.”
After gaining considerable popularity, Muhammad is currently living in Maarat al-Nu’man in southern rural Idlib, following his forced displacement from Eastern Ghouta by the Syrian regime.
